Departure from Karakol
Head to the regional transport terminal at the Ak-Tilek Bazaar in Karakol. Look for Marshrutka #335.
While Bokonbayevo is a primary town on the southern shore, this specific minibus route actually finishes its run slightly further down the road in Toguz-Bulak village. Boarding runs throughout the day as the vehicle fills up. The current fare is between 250 and 300 KGS.
Important Road Conditions Advisory
⚠️ Traveler Alert: A vast section of the southern lakeside highway is currently under active, major reconstruction.
Because of the heavy machinery, unpaved diversions, and sections where the asphalt has been entirely removed, the journey is currently slower and considerably bumpier than usual. Plan for a dusty 2.5 to 3-hour ride and keep your luggage wrapped securely in the trunk.
Arriving and Returning
The bus passes directly through the center of Bokonbayevo near its local bazaar and CBT tourist office before driving onwards to Toguz-Bulak. To return eastward to Karakol, you can easily wait at the main Bokonbayevo bus stop or flag down the returning #335 or any shared taxi from the main road. The public minibuses stop operating by late afternoon (around 16:30 – 17:30).
What to See & Do Along the Route

- Bokonbayevo Cultural Hub: Widely regarded as the cultural capital of the south shore. It is world-famous for its traditional eagle hunting (berkutchi) demonstrations, felt-making artisan workshops, and authentic lakeside yurt camps.
- Manjyly-Ata Sacred Springs: Located just a short distance before reaching Bokonbayevo, this valley of rolling hills holds immense spiritual significance for locals and features beautiful hiking paths overlooking the deep blue lake.
- Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon: While you will pass the turnoff to this magical red clay canyon shortly before arriving in Bokonbayevo, it is a absolute must-visit landmark for panoramic photos.
